University of Colombo MPhil & PhD in Sociology Programmes 2027
The Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, University of Colombo, has officially called for applications for its Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) postgraduate programmes for the 2027 intake. Both programmes are offered on-site with commencement scheduled for January 2027.

🎓 Degree Programmes & Eligibility Criteria
1. Master of Philosophy (MPhil) – 2 Years
Special Note: Upgradable to PhD after 1 year, subject to meeting the required academic conditions.
Applicants must satisfy any one of the following criteria:
- BA Honors (2nd Upper Class) in a non-related field + 5 to 6 years of work & research experience and a proven interest.
- BA Honors (2nd Upper Class) in a relevant field + research and/or working experience and/or publications.
- BA Honors (1st Class) in a relevant field + research and/or working experience.
- 1-Year Master’s Degree in a relevant field + research background.
- 2-Year Master’s Degree in a relevant field with either coursework & research or research.
2. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) – 3 Years
Applicants must satisfy any one of the following criteria:
- 2-Year MA Degree in a relevant or related field to the proposed research from a recognized university with either coursework and/or research.
- 2-Year MPhil Degree in a field relevant or related to the proposed research from a recognized university.
Additional Requirement for Both Programmes: Submission of a 2-page synopsis of the proposed research and satisfactory performance in an interview.

- Pay Application Fee: Pay the non-refundable fee of Rs. 2,000/- (Local) or USD 20/- (Foreign) to the "University of Colombo main collection" account under the relevant Reference Number at any People's Bank branch, or online via the UOC Online Payment Gateway at
cmb.ac.lk. - Verify Programme Account: Ensure the payment is credited to the correct degree programme using the proper fee code and designated account number.
- Access Online Application Portal: Visit the official registration link at https://sims.cmb.ac.lk/arts/registration.
- Fill Required Information: Complete personal details, academic background, and provide the mandatory 2-page research synopsis.
- Upload Payment Receipt: Attach a clear photograph or scan of your bank deposit slip or online payment confirmation.
- Submit Application: Review and submit the form online on or before the closing date.
